DIY Faux Wood

finished look

Crafty DIY with very little cost and that took about ten minutes to complete…from start to finish!

before and after

A very quick and simple DIY on how to turn Dollar Tree bath accessories into a beautiful faux wood look created with acrylic paint and brush strokes.

comparison pricing

I was shopping for a toothbrush holder and a soap dispenser that would create a look of natural elements for my master bath and came across this ceramic and wood grain set on amazon for $24. although it was the look I wanted to add to my bathroom; it was not the price that I wanted to pay!

dollar tree items

I took a short trip to my local Dollar Tree and picked up these two ceramic white accessories pieces for $2.00, in addition to some other crafty little items for a few more projects that I have in mind. Chances of me going into Dollar Tree and walking out with only two items is slim to none..!!! Just saying..

needed for project

For this quick little project you will need:

  • 1 small sponge brush
  • Acrylic paint stain in walnut color
  • Painters Tape
  • Rust oleum silver metallic finish spray paint
metallic finish

I started off by using my Rust-oleum Metallic silver spray paint to cover the plastic white nozzle giving it an appearance of metal and a more polished look.

applying paint

Mount painters or masking tape all the way around each of the ceramic pieces a little less than half way up from the bottom. Then using the gel walnut color by Americana and the small size sponge brush start creating light strokes from the line of the tape to the bottom of the item and continue this method all the way around. I wanted a natural wood grain, textured look so I opted not to do a second coat and I loved the finish!!

finished product

This was a very quick, easy and in expensive way of creating a faux wood look on a dollar tree item adding the natural element factor that I hoped to achieve in the master bath. I am very happy with how this turned out, the little amount of time it took and the amount of savings that will be used for other projects.
