This simple little project is a creative way of turning an old hamper basket into a chic and trendy outdoor Patio table.

before n after

After completing my laundry room makeover, and no longer using this old plastic laundry hamper I decided to reinvent it rather than trash it!! I had recently added two blue colored Adirondack chairs to my outdoor patio and decided to create a side table to compliment the space.

needed for project

For this project you will need:

  • Plastic Hamper Basket/Bin
  • Nautical Rope (dollar tree)
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • E6000
  • 12 inch metal Pizza Pan (dollar tree)
  • Metallic Gold Rust- Oleum Spray Paint
  • Ink Blue Rust-Oleum spray paint
  • Box Cutter /Utility knife
CUTTING OFF HANDLES

Using a sharp edged cutting tool, follow the outline of the edge where the handles are attached. Most hamper baskets have a similar outline making it easier to get a more even cut. Detaching the handles will give the basket more stability and a seamless look.

spray paint hamper

Use a Spray paint color of your choice to spray paint the inside and the outside of the hamper basket. I used the color Ink Blue by Rust Oleum to match my patio chairs.

***Always remember to spray paint in a well ventilated area using protective coverings over your nose and mouth***

spray paint pizza pan

Spray paint the metal pizza pan in your choice of color. I chose Metallic gold spray paint by Rust-Oleum for my table top. When spray painting the pan it is not necessary to paint both sides because the bottom of the pan will be completely glued to the base of the basket.

divide rope into 3 sections

Unwind the nautical rope to make three equal sections. Separating the rope will give it a less bulky appearance and will make it easier to adhere to the plastic. Using the method of separating the rope when crafting allows you to make use out of one roll for multiple projects.

contnue roping and gluing

Using hot glue start the first row by lining up the rope with the edge of the bottom of the basket. Continue gluing the rope around attaching it to the basket and securing it tightly. Do this several times, until you reach your desired look. I attached seven rope strands around the bottom.

top of basket

Using the hot glue I added five more rope strands to the top as well, eliminating any gap between the base and the tray.

attach tray

Turn the basket upside down and with hot glue attach the pizza pan tray to the base of the hamper basket. Add a few dabs of E6000 for additional security. When gluing is completed press the tray down firmly to the base of the basket. You can also add a weighted item on the top of the pan (I added a 3lb ceramic jar) and let it sit for several hours. Adding a weighted item will secure the adhesive between the tray and the base of the basket.

side table complete

This Chic & Useful idea is one of my favorite DIY’s! What made me excited about this project was how much I enjoyed saving money by reinventing an old item,!!!

pretty decor

The finished product added a perfect touch to my patio area. This is a very inexpensive way to reinvent an old item and create something that can be reused in an outdoor space. The metal, plastic and rope materials hold up well in outdoor weather conditions. I use the space under the basket to store my decorative pillows when not in use to keep the fabrics from fading.
